The properties of ATM networks are explored with a special view to both the local-area and wide-area communications needs of universities and other large organisations. Scenarios for the development, deployment, and impact of ATM network in an internet environment are proposed and discussed. Particular attention is given to the impact on hub and router technology, video and voice distribution, and the design of building and campus cabling systems.
